
A few weeks ago, we allowed a very committed broody Muscovy duck to incubate a clutch of 16 eggs. She did an outstanding job…and when the eggs hatched (35 days later), there was a surprise!

This time of year, a sweet fragrance fills the humid air: honeysuckle is blooming. The white blooms punctuate the dark green tangle of foliage that has encroached through, over, and around fencing. Honeysuckle heralds summer’s arrival, and invites creative uses of its perfumed flowers…arguably, a “weed”, but a lovely one.

What’s mud-brown, about 3 inches long, has pinching claws and a lot of attitude? A creature we found in the grass this morning!

Some people are enchanted by them…but others are less-enamored of the unique, ever-alert guinea fowl. We happen to be big fans (for a number of reasons), and are thrilled that the first group of eggs from our own stock are hatching today!

Though not often seen, snakes are also (wild) denizens of the farm. Today, we encountered two!

We love our kombucha – a delicious probiotic drink made from cultured sweet tea – around here. I’m always looking for new and creative ways to use this wonderful elixir, so when I found instructions for making kombucha tea wine, I had to try it.
