How about a lighthearted distraction? Our ducks love it when it’s warm enough for their kiddie pools to be out, even in winter. Because they’ll bathe as long as there’s water available – even if the temperatures are below freezing – we dump the pools at evening feeding time (and put them away), so that they’ll be dry when they go into their coop at night.

So maybe they’re not technically fossils yet, but the descendants of the dinosaurs clearly left their prints in what, the preceding evening, had been soft mud. Aged a few thousand years, they might become an exciting find for some future paleontologist.
As summer winds down (not that you can tell from this stretch of oppressively hot weather), young animals are growing, others are just being their playful porcine selves, and we’re picking juicy melons from the pig-planted patch.

The hatch is over, and there are ten energetic ducklings in the brooder. As with nearly every hatch, it was bittersweet: while it was, overall, a great hatch, it didn’t play out without some sadness.
It’s been a long wait for these ducklings – as of today, 34 days. Muscovy ducklings take longer than Mallard-derived breeds (like Indian Runners or Pekins) to hatch, but they’re definitely as cute!
Our all-girl gaggle of Pilgrim goslings is just over three weeks old and my, they have grown. And they’re mowers/weedeaters par excellence!
