I’m spellbound by a tall Silver Maple tree that seems to keep watch over our property. This morning, the dawn sky was all soft colors, the shadowy tree standing steadfast against the pink and lavender backdrop…an arboreal guardian.


The telltale small green globes have appeared on the walnut trees, accompanied by that unique, almost citrusy, fragrance: black walnuts are here! I’ve previously made an anthelmintic tincture from the green walnuts, but decided to try my hand at something a little different this year.

I’m an inveterate ponderer…an obsessive analyzer…someone who questions motivations – both others’ and my own. Periodically, I re-examine my desire to blog, wondering if it’s a good use of my time and if it’s worthwhile to continue. My blog isn’t self-supporting, and I pay for the hosting. And yet I still continue to do it. Why?

It seems as though something new is waiting to be discovered here each day. If I forget to bring my phone with me when I head outside – to do chores, projects, or foraging – I often regret it. Not today, though!

What’s more cooling and refreshing on a wickedly hot day than the sweet goodness of ice cold watermelon? (check out the health benefits here) And there are plenty of tasty treats that can be made from the watermelon – including the rinds!
