Right before we go out to do morning chores, we have a quick snack. Today, it was fresh, thick-sliced homemade sourdough toast with grass fed butter and wildcrafted jelly. There’s nothing like homemade to start the day right!

I was outside recently and an odd iridescence on the concrete of the patio caught my eye. Investigating it further, I discovered that it was a slug trail – something arguably quotidian, yet striking. Sadly, the photo doesn’t quite capture the trail’s true brilliance in the sunlight, but I saw it. And marveled.

Cast iron is wonderful cookware: durable, non-stick (when properly seasoned) without potentially harmful coatings, and built to last. You also get a workout – mostly upper body – when using cast iron (bonus!). We have many Lodge cast iron products, but one of the coolest is the Lodge Sportsman’s Grill. This little charmer has traveled extensively with us, but spent the last few years in the garage and gathered a little rust. No problem – cast iron cleans up nicely!

The farm flowers are blooming, providing plentiful inspiration for verse. I am particularly fond of the demure, diminutive blue violets – they’re such a lovely pop of color against the dark greenery. Not just beautiful to behold, violets also have a number of health benefits…and they make a gorgeous syrup!
