A couple of months ago, I discovered that a tree in the pig pasture had tiny fruit on it. Yes, the fruit was only about the size of grapes, rock hard, and sour to boot, but I had to look the tree up to find out if the fruit was edible…and, indeed, it was!

I’m loath to admit that I’d been fooled into believing the myth that farmers were the lobby that advanced the idea of daylight saving. As a farmer now, it flies in the face of reason that farmers would want this wholly artificial and arguably harmful construct to replace the natural schedule set by actual sunrise and sunset. In researching the topic further, I now understand the real reason why we engage in the daylight saving scheme: business interests.

I think kohlrabi is a misunderstood and underappreciated root vegetable. It’s homely, sure, but under that gnarly-looking exterior is crisp, juicy, and flavorful flesh that puts boring (mainstream) veggies like carrots and potatoes to shame. And it really shines in the probiotic goodness of sauerkraut!

Interested in trying to ferment something? Start with sauerkraut. It’s very easy and packed with probiotic goodness (and antioxidants, vitamins C and K, and other nutrients, thanks to the cabbage). Just find a nice – preferably organic to avoid chemical residue – medium cabbage and start fermenting!
