Haiku: Sailing Samaras

The helicopters are here! It’s that time of year: the maples are sending down their seeds via the incredible winged delivery systems called “samaras”. With luck and the right conditions, seedlings will grow from these seeds.

Did you know that maple samaras are edible? Animals certainly enjoy them (and they’re very nutritious). Our large silver maple drops these in mind-boggling quantities, and each year, many germinate and grow into tiny maples. We transplanted some last year, but the area we moved them to ended up being suboptimal for them. This year, I’ll be selecting transplanting locations more carefully…and hoping some of the big maple’s progeny grow into beautiful trees just like it.
